In the adhesive field, as in the case of many other industries, the latex or emulsion adhesive that can be thinned with water is rapidly gaining wide-spread recognition. The majority of these compounds are based on high molecular weight resins that have been polymerized in a water medium. Here, too, "Neville" Resins can be used to great advantage. Their inherent tackiness improves the initial adhesion and also aids in prolonging the tack life of the adhesive film. Their trial is strongly recommended to those who are actively engaged in or planning on producting latex adhesives. It is necessary that the highly hydrophobic "Neville" resins be emulsified or made water miscible so that they need only be stirred into the latex adhesive. The following emulsification information is given to this end. If a hydrocarbon solvent, such as toluene, mineral spirits, etc., can be tolerated in the adhesive formulation, then the emulsification of the

Initially, the resin is dissolved in the solvent mixture. The surfactants are then added to the resin solution and mixed until uniform. The water is added with continued high speed mixing. The resultant oil-in-water emulsion can be thinned as desired. The lower melting "neville" resins such as R-27 "Neville" resin, 10', R-29 "Neville" resin, 10' and "Nevillac" 10' can also be emulsified in a similar manner without the use of a solvent. Gentle heating of the resin phase is advisable to keep the viscosity increase of the emulsion before inversion at a minimum. The dispersing in water of the high-melting, hard "neville" resins (without solvent) is not quite so easily done. The most important factors to be desired are very fine particle size of the resin being dispersed and suitable dispersing agents and thickeners or stabilizers to keep the resin particles from settling. The following formulas illustrate the dispersing of the high-melting "Neville" resins in both anionic and nonionic systems: |
