"Orlon," "Acrilan," and "Dynel" are addition polymers based on acrylonitrile, with "Orlon" being based essentially on this monomer only, "Acrilan" containing a small amount of another monomer, and "Dynel" being a copolymer of about 40% acrylonitrile and 60% vinyl Chloride. |Dacron" is a condensation product of terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol. All four fibers are alike in showing marked hydrophobic properties and in their comparative lack of affinity for the dyestuffs generally used for such fibers, as wool, silk, cotton, and rayon. However, by the use of modified or new dyeing processes with dyestuffs selected for their suitability, these synthetic fibers can be dyed in a good range of shades with adequate fastness. General recommendations and specific suggestions for these fibers follow. |
