Copper 3-phenylsalicylate may be easily applied as a dispersion in water. Application by this method normally involves a conventional type padder with adjustable squeeze rolls and a drying unit. The following formulation for an aqueous dispersion is suggested "Triton" X-100/2 Copper 3=Phenylsalicylate/50 Cold Water/112 "Methocel" (1500 cp.)/2 |

To prepare the dispersion, the "methocel" should be dissolved by adding it to cold water, containing the "Triton," with rapid stirring. A paste is then formed by wetting out the copper salicylate with the "Methocel"-"Triton" solution and ground to a smooth dispersion with a threeroll mill or ball mill. Passage through a pressure-feed homogenizer or colloid mill will have the same effect. If such equipment is used, it may be necessary to reduce the viscosity of the dispersion somewhat by the addition of more water to the formulation. the grinding procedure is similar to that used in dispersing a pigment into a varnish or paint vehicle. Copper 3-phenylsalicylate may be applied to fabric by the conventional two-bath process. This involves the passage of the fabric through a water solution of the sodium salt of 3-phenylsalicylic acid as the first bath. The goods are then passed through a second bath consisting of a water solution of a copper salt, such as copper acetate or copper sulfate. The effectiven |
