Correcting Iron Deficiency in Trees, Vegetables, and Flowers |

It is a well-known fact that many plants suffer from iron deficiency. This has been especially severe in the citrus industry. Iron deficiency is easily diagnosed by visual examination of the leaves. In mild cases, it appears in the form of dark-green veins in the leaves. As the deficiency becomes more severe, the areas between the leaf veins become lighter and lighter in color and in very severe cases they are almost ivory colored. If the plant cannot overcome this deficiency it will gradually weaken and die. Even in mild cases, the crop yield is greatly diminished.
The mere presence of iron in the soil does not necessarily assure that the plant will be able to take in iron. Most iron salts, whether water soluble or insoluble, can be placed in the soil, or sprayed on the foliage of plants deficient in iron, with no apparent improvement.
