INHIBITOR SYSTEM The inhibitor system employed is generally broken down into two categories: antioxidants and corrosion inhibitors. Antioxidants are generally used with both castor-oil based fluids and synthetic-lubricant based fluids to prevent the oxidation of the lubricant. In the case of castor oil, small quantities of antioxidants such as 4-tert-butylcatechol or hydroquinone are used to prevent the formation of sludges which may result from the oxidation of castor oil. With synthetic lubricants of the polyglycol type, the oxidation products are volatile and antioxidants, such as bisphenol A (p,p'-Isopropylidenediphenol) or phenyl-\a-naphthylamine (approximately 2% or lower based on the weight of the lubricants), are used. If an ineffective antioxidant or too low a concentration of antioxidant is used, some lubricant will be oxidized during the evaporation test indicating apparent volatility of the lubricant. The problem of corrosion inhibition is generally specific for any particular formu |
