Sisal fibers respond readily to the bleaching action of "Albone" hydrogen peroxide. A good white, slightly creamy, can be obtained by bleaching at 180 F for 3 h in a bath containing 1.5 qt (3.3 lb) of "Albone" 35 and 6 lb of sodium silicate per 100 gal of water. The color is not further improved by extending the bleaching period but a full white can be obtained in 3 h by increasing the "Albone" 35 to 3 qt (7 lb) per 100 gal. The material should be scoured in a 1% acetic acid solution after bleaching.
A higher peroxide concentration with lower temperature also develops a good white. The fibers appear to retain more of their natural stiffness and luster. |
