The dimensional stability of fusible alloys is largely controlled by their bismuth content. As a general rule, alloys containing more than 55% bismuth expand, and those containing less than 48% bismuth contract, during solidification. Alloys containing 48 to 55% bismuth exhibit little change in volume on solidification. Several bismuth-rich alloys containing appreciable amounts of lead exhibit growth in the solid metal over a period of time following solidification. Approximately 90% of this growth takes place during the first 12 to 24 hours after casting, but small changes can still be detected as long as 1,000 hours after solidification. Some fusible alloys will wet glass, and surgical syringes have been assembled with a 44% tin-28% lead-27% bismuth-1% antimony alloy.
