In some beverages of this type sorbitol is used for its effect on mouthfeel and overall flavor. Although it contains as many calories per gram as sugar, sorbitol is used at levels of only 1% or 1.5%, as contrasted with customary use levels of 9% to 14% for sugar. Hence, the caloric content is drastically cut. sweetness is provided by the use of saccharin. |
