Distilled water (1,256 ml.) and the emulsifier solutions ("Santomerse" 3, "Brij"-35 and "Duponal" ME) are charged to the flask; agitation (400 rpm), nitrogen (8 ml./min.) and heat are applied. When the temperature of the solution reaches 40'C., 360 ml. potassium persulfate and 360 ml. sodium metabisulfite solutions are added. Five minutes later, with the solution at 40-45'C., one third of the monomer is added Shortly, an exotherm indicates that polymerization has begun and the heat and nitrogen are cut off. Monomer is then added dropwise and a maximum reaction temperature of 45'C. is maintained by cooling the flask with a water bath. The pH is held between 3.0 and 5.0 with 5- and 10-ml. additions of sodium bicarbonate solution. When all the monomer has been added (approximately 1.5 hour), an additional 88 ml. potassium persulfate and 88 ml. sodium metabisulfite solutions are added.
