Cooking Instructions: Charge first two items into stainless steel kettle equipped with agitation and inert gas. Heat to 430'F and add the litharge. hold at 430'F until sample from kettle is compatible with methyl alcohol in a 1:3 ratio. This is called "Alcoholysis of Oil", and is an essential step in making an alkyd from the whole oil (triglyceride). It usually takes 45 minutes to 1.25 hours. Next add phthalic anhydride, remainder of glycerine, and the xylol and change to a solvent cook. This means having an arrangement on your kettle similar to laboratory Dean and Stark tube that permits water of esterification to be taken off as the cook proceeds and Xylol returned back to kettle. In practice separator is filled 0.5 with water and 0.5 with xylol. By drawing off water from time to time and keeping water level constant-Xylol content in cook remains constant. Gradually increase heat on solvent cook to 340'F where initial reflux starts. At this point shut off inert gas and gradually increase heat to 3 |
