In the HLB system, a value assigned to the respective components of emulsion systems indicates their relative lipophilic (non-polar) or hydrophilic (polar) characteristics. This value represents the ratio between the two characteristics. Each emulsifier and major component of an emulsion is assigned an HLB value from 1 to 20, although higher values are known. the higher the HLB, the more the hydrophilic, water soluble portion predominates. |
