Wash the shoes. After thoroughly drying, the laces are tacked down and the leather is sealed by soaking in lacquer, shellac or wax. The use of wax, either paraffin or a mixture of paraffin and beeswax, necessitates additional steps, but has the advantage of permitting shaping deformed shoes while the wax is still soft. When the wax has set, two coats of shellac are applied by dipping and allowed by dry. this acts as a barrier to prevent action of the conducting lacquer on the wax. the conducting lacquer can be sprayed directly on a lacquer or shellac surface but, if brushed on shellac, a prior coating of boiled linseed oil, which has been permitted to dry overnight, is desirable since the conducting lacquer does not cover well during brushing. A coat of regular lacquer may be applied over the linseed oil film prior to metalizing to overcome the poor adhesion inherent in the highly thinned conducting lacquer. The conducting lacquer consists |

Only enough should be prepared for immediate use, since the copper powder causes the lacquer to jell on standing. The lacquer should be low in gum (less than 5% and should be added after the thinner and copper powder have been well mixed. the powder, which is obtainable in many large paint and hardware stores, should be washed with thinner before using, if greasy. When spraying, the gun is not held so close as to flood the surface, but at a distance so that the film dries almost as soon as it is applies. The dry surface must be dull. If glossy, it indicates that the copper particles are coated with a layer of lacquer which will prevent passage of current. When completely covered (two coats are usually sufficient), the shoes are allowed to dry for 1-2 hours, and fine wire is attached at a few points by wrapping around the shoes, in order to obtain uniform current distribution in the plating solution. Before plating over the conducting copper lacquer film, the shoes may be immersed in a solution |
