Limed Rosin With heat and agitation, dissolve 100 parts rosin in 25 parts mineral spirits in a flask equipped with a stirrer, thermometer and condenser. Slowly add, at 130 to 140'C with stirring, a slurry containing 7 parts lime (6.5 parts lime for wood rosin), 14 parts mineral spirits and 0.25 parts glacial acetic acid; add in small increments to control foraming. Hold with agitation at 130 to 140'C for 30 to 60 min, then add sufficient mineral spirits for filtering (50% N.V. solution).
Filter and recover by steam distillation. An inert gas sparge can be used to help remove solvent until steam is introduced at 200'C. Continue up to 250'C and until distillate contains less than 10% "oils." Reintroduce N2 sparge and cool below 220'C; hold to allow gas bubbles to dissipate and pour.
