nitrocellulose emulsions are prepared by first making a uniform lacquer phase and then emulsifyint. preparation of lacquer phase: (a) lacquer phases for unpigmented emulsions: dissolve the nitrocellulose, castor oil, and "lissapol" NX in the solvents, using a good high-speed hugh-shear mixer. a milky solution will be obtained form water-wet nitrocellulose. (b) lacquer phases for pigmented emulsions: the simplest nethod is to use pigmented nitrocellulose chips. follow procedure (a) but hold back some of the solvent nixture for dissolving the chips. if pigmented chips are not used, mill the pigment with some of the nitrocellulose solution. add this mixture, or the solution of pigmented chips, to the main solution. butanol-wet nitrocellulose is recommended for colored bases made by ball-millimg pigment in nitrocellulose solutions using steel balls. this is to avoid excessive corrosion of the steel balls. enulsification: add the lacquer phase alowly to the water. use rapid propeller stirr |
