The protective colloid, surfactant, buffer, and catalyst are blended into the water and charged into a reaction vessel equipped with an agitator, suitable means of heating and colling, a condenser, and a reservoir for monomer. The vessel is sealed and a nitrogen purge is used to expel all oxygen from the system. The monomer (or comonomer mix) is placed in the reservoir. Approximately 10 percent of the monomer (or comonomer mix) is then added to the reactor with water bath at 68 to 70'C and stirred at 220 rpm. As the polymerization proceeds, the reflux rate will decrease and the temperature will rise to about 75'C. At this time, the remaining monomer (or comonomer mix) is added uniformly, with stirring, for 2-4 hours at 75-80'C. After the delayed addition is complete the reaction mixture is heated to 90 to 95'C for 30 minutes to complete the reaction and reduce the residual monomer content to less than one percent.
