1. charge Homogenized Tall Oil Rosin into kettle. Best results are obtained in stainless equipment provided with mechanical agitation. An inert blanket, other than carbon dioxide, during the reaction prevents degradation of color. (Carbon dioxide cannot be used because the lime will be converted to calcium carbonate which is not reactive.) 2. Heat to 320'F. If mechanical agitation is not provided a somewhat higher temperature may be found desirable.
3. Sprinkle in one half of the required lime. The speed of addition will be determined by the amount of foam produced with the reaction.
4. Mix the calcium acetate with the last half of the lime and sprinkle into kettle. The small amount of calcium acetate is added to catalyze the last portion of the reaction.
5. Continue reaction for about an hour. If mechanical agitation is not provided two hours may be required to obtain the desired end product.
6. Cool and thin to the desired viscosity with mineral spirits.
