and mix well. a. The clay slurries used in coating paper can be prepared by the following general procedure: Into the mixing tank, place 90 lb of water, 10 oz of sodium tetraphosphate dissolved in water, 100 lb coating clay, and mix well. Sodium hexametaphosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, ammonium caseinate, and ammonia, have also been found satisfactory for the dispersion of the clay. The amounts fluctuate between 0.1% to 1% based on the weight of the dry clay. The dispersing action of the polyphosphates is more efficient than that of either soda ash or trisodium phosphate. Ammonia produces a similar thinning action but will evaporate on standing. Instead of preparing the clay-water mix, ready-made dispersed clay slurries can be purchased. As such clay dispersions are shipped in tank cars to respective mills, and pumped from the cars directly to the mixing tanks, they can save time and storage space for the mill owner. b.
