The "Stepan" C25 is added to a 3-neck flask equipped with capillary nitrogen inlet tube, stirrer, and thermometer. Because of the volatility of "Stepan" C25, it is best to operate without a vacuum.
The "Stepan" C25 has such a low acid number that no neutralization of free fatty acid is required. The c25 is added to the flask, nitrogen started slowly bubbling, and the temperature is raised to about 130'C.
The triethylene glycol containing 1.5% of alcoholic sodium methylate (based on the C25) is slowly added through a dropping funnel, and then the reaction is continued for 3 to 4 hours around 130'C, until the flask reaches constant weight, indicating evolution of all methanol and completion of the reaction.
The final liquid product can be bleached to a straw color with about 0.1% of hydrogen peroxide.
Other fatty-based plasticizers such as "Cellosolve" oleate, can be made in similar manner from the corresponding methyl esters. |
