Phenolic and melamine resins are molded into small or medium-size parts by compression in multicavity dies. The excess resin, which is forced out of the cavities on the face of the pressure plate, tends to stick to the plates. To prevent sticking and to facilitate removal of the molded product, a number of lubricants and releasing agents have been used, among which are solid carnauba wax, paste waxes, and silicones.
Carnauba wax has been found generally satisfactory. It is applied by rubbing a piece of carnauba wax on the dies and pressure plate. The wax is frequently kept preheated so that it is fairly soft and is applied easily. It is an effective lubricant and releasing agent, but its high price is objectionable. |
