Polyesters are thermosetting, unsaturated alkyd compounds. They are usually obtained in concentration of 100% solids, containing about 30% monomeric styrene, and require relatively low temperatures and pressures for rapid, catalyst-promoted cures. With proper combinations of catalysts, they can be cured at room-temperature. In the form of reinforced plastics, produced by molding or laminating, these resins have found use in a variety of applications. The principal reinforcements in use today are glass cloth, mat, chopped fibers, paper, and cloth. Castings are readily made with these resins and unusual and intricately shaped articles are also easily produced. Molded and laminated products can be made on a small hydraulic press equipped with a set of electrically heated platens and molds. Curing temperatures vary from room temperature to 300'F and pressures from 5 to 100 psi. As the curing time depends on the thicknesses involved it may be a few minutes for thicknesses up to 1/8-inch.
