The methyl laurate is simply charged into a 3-neck flask provided with a capillary nitrogen-inlet tube, stirrer, thermometer, and connection to a water aspirator. A vacuum of about 100 mm is applied, which starts the nitrogen slowly bubbling through, and the methyl laurate is heated to 125'C. Then 1.5% of alcoholic sodium methylate (based on the weight of the laurate) is added to the PEG 400, and this is slowly run into the flask from a dropping funnel in about 45 min. The temperature is brought back to 125'C and held for two to three hours to ensure completion of the reaction. By weighing the entire flask periodically it is possible to tell when all of the methanol has gone off, as the flask will come to constant weight. The pH can be adjusted to any desired value with an acid like phosphoric, and salts or traces of fatty acid are then filtered off. |
