To prepare Solution A, add 24 gallons of water to the first container. If a standard 50-gal wooden barrel is used, the water will be about 16 inches deep. Next add 18 lb (about 7 coffee cans) of copper sulfate crystals. Stir until the crystals dissolve. (Less stirring is required if the crystals are added to the water on the day before the solution is to be used.) To prepare solution B, add 26 gallons of water to the second container.
If a standard 55-gal oil drum is used, the water will be about 15 inches deep. Then add 18 lb (about 6 coffee cans) of powdered sodium chromate slowly while stirring. This chemical dissolves readily.
Stand the peeled or partially peeled green posts with the butt end down in solution A. Add enough posts so that the solution nearly reaches the top of the container. In this way the ground area of the post is surrounded by liquid. If crooked posts are being treated, the liquid may not rise high enough.
