Duplicating stencils are semi-plastic mats used for the preparation of copy by means of a duplicating machine. The stencil consists generally of a coating of highly plasticized nitrocellulose lacquer deposited on one side of a specially prepared paper commonly referred to as yoshino tissue. This paper is characterized by a fibrous structure with a relatively open weave. It is highly absorbent and has greater tear strength in one direction. The combination of special lacquer and paper weave permits the surface of the stencil to be typed (cut) with a stylus so that the impression acts as a screen opening for the ink when the stencil is held against an inked pad. Another specific component of duplicating stencils is a commercial chlorinated hydrocarbon known as "Halowax," which, when allowed to recrystallize slowly from an appropriate solvent, produces a fibrous or needle-like structure. Procedure: The grouped components are prepared separately and added to the batch as mixtures. (b) The prussian blue is ground in the "AA" Castor Oil on a roller mill till uniform. (c) The "Halowax" is dispersed in the "AA" Castor Oil with heat and stirring, the stearic acid is added, after which the entire mix is allowed to cool to room temperature. (a) The collodion is weighed into a closed container fitted with an explosion-proof, slow-speed agitator (equipment should be suitably grounded). The triacetin is added, followed by the benzyl alcohol. All additions should be followed by adequate stirring to ensure uniformity. Next follows the b mixture, the c mixture, the rest of the "AA" Castor Oil, and finally, the 13A alcohol. After a final stirring, the solution should be allowed to stand. To avoid bubbles, it is drawn for use from the bottom of the vessel. |
