Duplicating Stencils |

Duplicating stencils are semi-plastic mats used for the preparation of copy by means of a duplicating machine. The stencil consists generally of a coating of highly plasticized nitrocellulose lacquer deposited on one side of a specially prepared paper commonly referred to as yoshino tissue. This paper is characterized by a fibrous structure with a relatively open weave. It is highly absorbent and has greater tear strength in one direction. The combination of special lacquer and paper weave permits the surface of the stencil to be typed (cut) with a stylus so that the impression acts as a screen opening for the ink when the stencil is held against an inked pad. Another specific component of duplicating stencils is a commercial chlorinated hydrocarbon known as "Halowax," which, when allowed to recrystallize slowly from an appropriate solvent, produces a fibrous or needle-like structure. This, superimposed on the paper as part oof the lacquer, rei |

Procedure: The "Halowax" is dispersed in the "AA" Castor Oil with heat and stirring. It is then allowed to cool to room temperature. The film scrap is next cut in a closed container fitted with a slow-speed, explosion-proof mixer. The acetone, ethyl acetate, and 13A alcohol are filled into the mixer and the scrap added. When the film has been completely dissolved, the "Fastolux" blue paste is added, followed by "Halowax"/"AA" Castor Oil mixture, the "Ocenol," and the orthophenyl phenol. The mixture should be thoroughly stirred after each addition. Then follows butyl stearate, oleic acid, and the mixture is then brought to final dilution with the anhydrous methanol. The entire mixture is thoroughly stirred and allowed to stand to remove bubbles. The mixture is drawn from the bottom through a strainer before use. |
