Heat the oil and isophthalic acid quickly to 580'F, and hold this temperature for 10 minutes. Cool to 390'F and add the pentaerythritol and enough xylene to azeotrope the water formed. Raise the temperature rapidly to 450'F, and hold it there until the water has azeotroped off and the alkyd has the desired viscosity.
Cool the alkyd, dilute with the mineral spirits and remaining xylene, and add the Z-6018. Heat at the reflux temperature of the solvent (320 to 330'F) until a sample of the resin will cure to a clear film at 300'F. Dilute to 50% NVM with additional high flash mineral spirits (about 20 parts). |
