circulate at room temperature or slightly warm until clean. Monitor to be sure the pH is below 2.7.
Notes: Approximately 4 lb of citric acid are required to dissolve 1 lb of calcium phosphate or hydroxyapatite scale.
The use of ammonium bifluoride is not recommended unless necessary to dissolve silicates.
Citric acid is used for removal of calcium phosphate scales deposited on the walls of pipes, pumps, and heat exchangers. Citric acid will dissolve and chelate or sequester calcium and other metal ions only if the pH is held below pH 2.7. The addition of a corrosion inhibitor is recommended. Ammonium bifluoride can be added if the scale contains silicates, although ABF at elevated temperatures can be corrosive. |
