The many soils and colors in rag stock must be removed if high quality pulp is to be obtained. cleaner rags produced in the cooking operation required less bleach when the pulp is formed. A "Metso" pentahydrate sodium metasilicate removes color without affecting fibre strength. As a 20-33% replacement of caustic soda on a pound for pound basis, "Metso" pentahydrate sodium metasilicate is very useful in removing iron sulfur dyes and indigos. Rags are whiter, cleaner, stronger and more readily bleached. If rags are exceptionally dirty or greasy, a little saponified rosin or pine oil will improve the operation. The following formula gives excellent results in cooking 4000 lb loads of dirty rags. Water/2200 gal Caustic Soda/320 lb "Metso" Granular (or "Metso" pentabead)/80 lb Rosin Size/25 lb Rags are cooked for ten hours.
