It is suggested that the minimum batch size should be 500 g because of reaction rate considerations.
charge water (1) into the reaction flask; purge with nitrogen for 15 min. Add "Abex" 18S (2), and allow to dissolve. Then add 20% of the premixed monomers, vinyl acetate (3) and "Sipomer" DMM (4), and emulsify. Purge the emulsion with nitrogen for five minutes. Heat the batch to 50'C before adding the K2S2O8 (5); allow approximately one minute to dissolve. Then add one ml of the NaHSO3 solution (6) to initiate the reactions.
After initiation, the heat of polymerization will raise the batch temperature. As the temperature reaches 60'C, start the flow of the remaining monomer mixture. During the addition time, allow the temperature to reach 70'C and maintain between 68 and 70'C throughout the reaction cycle.
