Charge all but 50 parts of the water, the sodium bicarbonate, and the AEROSOL 22 to the reaction kettle. Start the stirrer, steam, and nitrogen and allow to run for 0.5 hour, holding the temperature at 93'c.
before starting the addition of other ingredients. Dissolve the ammonium persulfate in the 50 parts water retained for this purpose and slowly run 1/5 of this solution into the reaction kettle. Start the monomer addition. Add dropwise the remainder of the catalyst solution and all of the monomer over a period of 2-3 hr for the 40% polymer emulsion and a period of 1-1.5 hr for the 20% polymer emulsion. Adjust the rate of addition so that approximately 1/8 of the ammonium persulfate remains to be added after all of the styrene monomer has been added. After monomer addition has been completed, continue stirring the batch, maintaining a temperature of 93'C. for 1 hour longer. Shut off the nitrogen and cool the emulsion to 35'C. with continued stirring. to prevent further polymerization add 50 ppm. di-ter |
