No.1 Washable wallpapers can be prepared by after-coating a printed wallpaper with a protein such as alpha protein and/or soya bean flour. After the paper has been coated, the protein material is insolubilized by spraying on a solution that generally consists of glyoxal, alum, borax, and water. A typical formula for this use is as follows Borax/20 lb Glyoxal/1 gla Alum/80 lb Water/To make 120 gal of solution |

After application of this coating, the wallpaper is air dried to give the desired degree of insolubilization. No.2 Sodium formate is used in the production of water-resistant wallpaper in the treatment of the slpha soya protein coated paper. Prior to the final drying, the paper is run through a bath containing aluminum sulfate (approximately one pound hydrated alum per gallon) and sodium formate (approximately 0.33 lb/gal). The length of time the coated paper is allowed to remain in the bath and the amount of solution left on the coated paper will determine the extent of tanning or freezing action the soya protein coating undergoes. With a casein pigment coating which contained 6.00% casein, 0.60% borax, 0.05% sodium tetraphosphate, 1.00% Poncol Blue GDD Double Powder, 50.00% Kaolin and 43.35% water is used Paper samples are coated with this formula, then dried. The coating apparatus was adjusted to obtain a thick coating on the paper. The dried coated samples are then treated in a fixing bath conta |
