"Cellosize" Hydroxyethyl Cellulose WP-09/1.85 "Cellosize" Hydroxyethyl Cellulose WP-300/0.69 Water/54.00 In a suitable polymerization kettle fitted with an agitator and condenser, prepare an aqueous solution of the "Cellosize," "Tergitol" Nonionic NPX, and potassium persulfate catalyst in the proportions indicated above. Blend the two monomers and add 5% of this mixture to the aqueous system with stirring. Establish and maintain a nitrogen blanket over the system throughout the polymerization period. Continue agitation and apply external heat to the kettle till a temperature of 70'C is reached, at which time polymerization of the initial charge is essentially complete. Add, with agitation, the remainder of the monomer mixture in small increments at rate of about 40% per hour so as to maintain a temperature between 70 to 75'C in the kettle with very slight refluxing. Dissolve 2.5 sodium lauryl sulfate, 1 ammonium persulfate, and 5 of 28% sodium acrylate solution in 250 of water. Add 75 vinyl propionate and 25 di(n-butyl) maleate. Adjust the pH to 5.2 and polymerize by heating with agitation to 80 and 90'C for 4 hours. Adjust the pH of the final emulsion to 6.8 by adding required amounts of 10% sodium bicarbonate solution. |
